THE HOUSE OF COMMONS
5th May 2021
Adam Crane tops off a recent session in Essex with a brace of spectacular commons using a range of our bait!
For many the draw of carp fishing is the massive array of diversity in the sport, from the different varieties of scale patterns, to the individual characteristics of each fish, it is ever changing. The carping world seems to be almost evenly split on their favourite lineage of the species, with arguments for and against the two most prolific parties, commons and mirrors, often discussed at great length both on the bank and online. One thing is for sure, if you find somewhere with a special stock of lovely looking fish, it doesn’t matter what they are, which is exactly what Adam Crane discovered on his Essex club water. During his most recent session, he landed a brace of contrasting, yet equally magnificent commons, from a rather busy Essex club water.
It pumps out attraction at a rapid rate, transmitting food signals far and wide.
Adam revealed:
“After turning up on the day of the new season I knew it would be busy! I wasn’t wrong, as I soon found 20 keen anglers all fishing and clearly happy to be out. Considering the rather drab weather we have been getting on and off through this spring, the sun was shining this time, and I knew the fish would be patrolling the margins.
“I made my way to a corner of the lake and quickly saw one show in close. As the fish were so close in, I baited by hand with a mix of 12mm Krill and Manilla soaked in Salmon Oil, Pure Calanus and Cloudy Krill, which was coated in Krill Active mix. I wanted to keep the disturbance down to an absolute minimum, as the fish were clearly in the area. To ensure I was presented, I deployed the ever-faithful Stiff Hinge, armed with a Pastel pink Mulbz hookbait.
“The following morning, the rod screamed off and I was in, which produced a stunning 31lb 4oz common. It would’ve been rude not to reset the trap, as the fish were still about. Unfortunately, the fish just didn’t play ball for the rest of the day, the activity wasn’t quite the same as the day I arrived. With very little swim options elsewhere on the lake, I decided to stay put for my second night, all be it with very little confidence.
“Little did I know I would have a repeat occurrence the following morning from the same margin! Something heavy was on the end and following a long plodding battle, all under the rod tip, she gave herself up. If he first fish was stunning this one was even better and slightly bigger at 33lb 8oz. It was the most stunning woodcarving common I’ve ever had the joy of catching! It capped off the session nicely and left me with some mega memories that will last a lifetime, that I shared with some good friends.”
