The Quarry kicks the Spring season off with a bang
Steve French’s Gigantica Giant
23rd January 2019
After a week of consistent catching, Steve French was finally rewarded with what he had hoped to catch from the one and only Gigantica.
When we spoke to Steve about his session, this is what he told us: “Gigantica in January was always going to be cold, but with all the stockies going in over the past three years there was always a chance of some action. I just hoped that they would encourage the bigger and better ones to feed.
As it was only myself and my brother on that week, the swims were organised in advance and fortunately for me I was in Co’s Point. I decided to fish with solid PVA bags at range with Krill Dumbell Wafter hookbaits. After much debate and leading around I finally settled on an area at 31 wraps away from the usual Co’s spots. The previous week had fished poorly, so I felt bait was needed to get things going. Crumbed Manilla, Vortex and The Krill coupled with plenty of sweetcorn and a good helping of Pure Hemp Oil formed my chosen mix.
I kicked things off with 20 spombs of bait and on the second night I was rewarded with my first take of the trip, unfortunately the small stockie I had hooked fell off at the net. Whilst disappointing, it was a sign of fish on the spot. So, going into the third night I increased the bait to 30 spombs.
The increase of bait seemed to have paid off, as Tuesday night I managed to land three stockies. The best of which was a cracking 24-pounder, this fish was just 7lb when introduced to the lake only 14 months ago! With the extra bait having worked I repeated the process and the bites kept coming, two of which brought me mirrors of 27lb and 27lb 12oz.
As the week progressed the weather got colder and colder, by Friday snow had even began to fall. Despite the unfavourable weather, the fish were still feeding, so I made the conscious decision to up the bait to 40 spombs for the final night of the trip. By morning I had landed two final stockies that were both mid doubles.
With the session very near to its closing stage I received one last bite, the bite I had been hoping for all week. With only two hours left on the clock my net was graced with the Patched Fully, an incredible 56lb 8oz mirror!”
